How to Name Your Business/Brand

Naming your business or brand is more than just a name. It’s one of the most important decisions you’ll make. A great name creates a strong first impression and sets the tone for your business/brand’s identity. Whether you're launching a new venture or rebranding an existing one, here are some key things to consider when choosing the right name.

Clarity Over Cleverness

It’s tempting to get creative, but don’t sacrifice clarity for a something clever. Your name should be easy to pronounce, spell, and remember. If people can’t say it or search it, they’ll forget it.

Make It Meaningful

Your name should reflect what you do or what you stand for. It can be literal (like “Whole Foods”) or more abstract (like “Nike”), but there should be a story or purpose behind it that connects to your brand values.

Check Availability

Before falling in love with a name, make sure the domain name is available, the social media handles aren’t taken, and no other businesses in your industry are already using it. Legal conflicts can be costly and damaging to your brand’s credibility.

Think Long-Term

Avoid trends or buzzwords that might date your brand in a few years. A timeless name gives your business room to grow, expand, or even pivot if needed. When I chose Valley Creative, it was a nod to my home of Cherry Valley, MA but I left out the full name because you can find valleys in a lot of places and I didn't want to be tied down geographically.

Test It Out

Say it out loud. Write it down. Ask a few trusted people what they think. Sometimes a name that looks good on paper doesn’t sound right in conversation or vice versa.

Final Thought

A name is more than just words, it’s the foundation of your brand identity. Invest the time and thought it deserves and you’ll build a name that resonates with your audience and stands the test of time.
